At Walt Disney World Resort, “Rope Drop” refers to the exciting park-opening process that lets you beat the crowds and start your day with shorter lines at popular attractions. Here’s how to make the most of Rope Drop at Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom!

Step 1: Security and Transportation
Before reaching the park gates, all guests go through a security screening, including a bag check and metal detectors. Make sure all bag compartments are unzipped and pockets emptied to make this process as quick as possible. Security lines are usually shorter in the early morning, so arriving early gives you a smoother start!

✨TIP: Plan your travel time carefully! Depending on where you’re staying, transportation to the parks might include buses, the monorail, Skyliner, or even a ferry. Disney Resort hotel guests get early park entry 30 minutes before the general public, so this perk is great for getting on those high-demand rides! Disney recommends allowing 60-90 minutes travel time.
Step 2: Entry Gates
Once through security, head to the park gates, where Cast Members scan your MagicBand, MagicMobile, or ticket card. For multi-day tickets, Walt Disney World uses a fingerprint scan to link tickets to each guest. This is also a great time to grab a park map or ask a Cast Member about any special events happening that day!

Step 3: Pre-Rope Drop Area
Disney opens a few areas of each park before the official opening to reduce congestion. At Magic Kingdom, for example, guests can explore Main Street, U.S.A., grab a snack at Starbucks, or take photos in front of Cinderella Castle. At EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom, you can explore certain areas near the entrances and enjoy the atmosphere.
Step 4: Rope Drop Ceremony
As the park officially opens, Cast Members hold guests behind a “rope” at each land entrance or attraction path. Sometimes, there’s a fun welcome announcement to mark the start of the day! At opening time, Cast Members will "drop the rope" (move it to the side) - hence the name Rope Drop -and allow guests to walk—no running!—to their first attractions.

✨ TIP: If you’re looking to ride popular attractions with minimal wait times, prioritize those at the start of your day. For Magic Kingdom, head to Seven Dwarfs Mine Train or Space Mountain. At Hollywood Studios, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance and Slinky Dog Dash are favorites. In EPCOT, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind are top choices, while Avatar Flight of Passage is a must-visit first stop at Animal Kingdom.
Step 5: Lightning Lane Selections
If you’ve preselected Lightning Lane attractions for the day, you can start booking your next Lightning Lane attraction as soon as you've tapped into your first ride. Rope Drop makes the perfect time to experience your favorite attraction that you may not have secured a Lightning Lane pass, or attractions that you may want to ride more than once.
Why Arrive Early?
Arriving early at Rope Drop gives you a significant advantage: shorter lines, the chance to explore popular attractions before the crowds, and often a little extra magic with surprise character sightings or welcome shows. Being in the first wave of guests means you can experience more in the morning and plan for a relaxed afternoon or additional attractions.
When to Leave Your Resort: For Disney Resort hotel guests aiming to maximize Early Entry, plan to leave your hotel 60–90 minutes before Early Entry begins (or two hours before regular park opening if you’re using other transportation options). This allows time for transportation, security, and finding a good spot at the gates. Non-resort guests should also aim to arrive 60–90 minutes before the park opens to be near the front of the crowd when Rope Drop starts.
